Job Description
Direct Care Staff provides compassionate support and assistance to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This role promotes independence, community inclusion, and social integration while ensuring individuals’ safety and well-being. The ideal candidate will be patient, empathetic, and dedicated to empowering individuals to reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Living Support
- Assist individuals with daily living activities, including bathing, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, and feeding as needed.
- Monitor and ensure personal hygiene and cleanliness.
- Skill Development
- Teach life skills such as money management, cooking, and cleaning to promote independence.
- Mentor individuals to build social skills, relationships, and self-confidence.
- Community Inclusion
- Support individuals in community events, recreational activities, and employment opportunities.
- Encourage integration into community settings while respecting individual preferences.
- Behavioral Support
- Implement individualized support plans (ISPs) and behavior management strategies.
- Respond appropriately to challenging behaviors and de-escalate situations using approved techniques.
- Health and Safety
- Monitor and report any changes in individuals’ health or behavior.
- Administer medications as directed (if certified).
- Ensure a safe environment by adhering to safety protocols and procedures.
- Documentation
- Maintain accurate and timely records, including daily logs, progress notes, and incident reports.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and families regarding individuals’ needs and progress.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (required).
- Post-secondary education in healthcare, psychology, social work, or a related field (preferred).
- Previous experience working with individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities (1-2 years preferred).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if required for the role).
- Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Crisis Intervention (or willingness to obtain).

- Physical ability to assist with mobility and daily living tasks.
Work Environment
- May include residential homes, community settings, or day programs.
- Requires flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and assist with mobility for extended periods.
- Ability to lift to 50 pounds as needed.
- Capacity to perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, and reaching.
Reports To: Program Manager or Supervisor.
